Tensaw Boatworks: Born of the Delta, Built for the Water
Nestled near the banks of Dog River, Tensaw Boatworks began with a simple love for the water. Owner and captain Ben Cummings, a true Mobile Bay native, turned that lifelong passion into something lasting - a boat shop where craftsmanship and community meet. From the early days carving hulls in his workshop, Ben has stayed true to his roots. Every build is a tribute to the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, built with precision for anglers and adventurers alike. Each hand-shaped, shallow-draft skiff carries the soul of the Delta in every line and layer.
Ben’s journey into boat building was shaped by more than just the water - it was forged by mentorship. He apprenticed under legendary angler and custom skiff builder Harry Spears, whose influence is evident in Ben’s hands-on, detail-driven approach. Later, he collaborated with renowned designer Christopher Morejohn to develop the plans for his signature model: the Tensaw 186, a lightweight, high-performance skiff built for skinny water and serious anglers.
At his shop just off Dog River Drive, Ben Cummings personally oversees every build, holding each to the highest standards of craftsmanship. In June 2025, his signature creation - the custom “redfish-catching machine” - made its debut on the Gulf Coast. It didn’t go unnoticed. With its sleek lines, precision handling, and heritage-forward design, the skiff drew plenty of double takes, excited high-fives, and more than a few envious glances from anglers who know a serious boat when they see one. It’s more than a skiff - it’s the spirit of the Delta, brought to life.
